About the artist

Angelica Bess is a black, self-taught visual artist and musician based in Brooklyn, New York. Her collage work plays with color, scale, and texture to reposition the black identity in new visions and narratives. The artist uses a simple cut-and-paste technique with her collection of old magazines, children’s books, and historical textbooks to create a 2D surreal story. She is inspired by black folk art, playfulness, and absurdity, creating her own interpretation of black individuality and uniqueness. Bess is also a fixture in the New York music scene as a singer and multi-instrumentalist in projects and collaborations such as Body Language, Kalbells, Machinedrum, and Erica Eso.
